What are possible environmental influences as causes of Borderline Personality Disorders?

Answer:

There is no doubt that environmental influences in the family and social relationships have a big impact on the development and maintenance of Borderline Personality Disorder. One common theory (Dialectic-behavioural therapy) of BPD has a biological-psychosocial approach. The child has a biological vulnerability, but environmental factors and ongoing traumatic experiences in early childhood are of special relevance for the development of the pathology of the disorder.

  • 71% of BPD clients are physically abused

  • 68% are sexually abused girls or boys

  • 62% had serious domestic violence in their family

Ongoing research demonstrates, that BPD clients more likely report early separation from important persons (father or mother), were subject to emotional neglect of their caregivers. Very often parents of Borderline patients also have severe problems in the area of impulse control, affective instability or substance abuse.
