Are there surveys for subjective well-being and satisfaction with life? Where do I find Ed Diener's Satisfaction with Life Survey (SWLS)? How can I estimate if I am satisfied and have a responsible life?

Most questionnaires of scales focus on negative aspects of the quality of life or deficits of well-being. This small 5 item scale was developed by Ed Diener, one of the leading psychologists with special interest in subjective wellbeing. Here is his SWLS Scale (which is public domain and a great and very interesting tool!)

Below are five statements that you may agree or disgree with. Using the 1 - 7 scale below, indicate your agreement with each item by placing the appropriate number on the line preceding that item. Please be open and honest in your response.

7 - Strongly agree
6 - Agree
5 - Slightly agree
4 - Neither agree nor disagree
3 - Slightly disagree
2 - Disagree
1 - Strongly disagree
In most ways my life is close to my ideal.
The conditions of my life are excellent.
I am satisfied with my life.
In most ways my life is close to my ideal
If I could live my life over, I would change almost nothing.

Interpretation of the result:

35 - 31Extremely satisfied
26 - 30Satisfied
21 - 25Sligthly satisfied
15 - 19Slightly dissatisfied
10 - 14Dissatisfied
5 - 9Extremely dissatisfied
