Can you be treated for an addiction when you also have other psychiatric or psychological problems?

Answer:

Yes, you can. Addicted people often have other psychiatric problems. This is called dual problems or 'double trouble'. Depending on the kind and severity of the psychiatric problems you have and the medication you use, a treatment plan will be set up.

An addiction can be caused by or be reinforced by psychiatric problems. For some psychiatric problems, it is better if the addict is admitted to a mental institution rather than to a treatment center for addicts.
