What is clomipramine (Anafranil)?

Answer:

  • Clomipramine (Anafranil) is in a class of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants. Clomipramine affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause obsessive-compulsive disorder. Clomipramin has had a wide usage for the treatment of depression, but nowadays SSRI medicines are used instead, since they have the same positive effect but less unwanted side effects.
  • Clomipramine is used to relieve symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder such as recurrent thoughts or feelings and repetitive actions.
  • Clomipramine increases the pain killing effects of opioids (morphine, methadone, etc.)
  • Clomipramine may also be used for purposes other than those listed here.
