What are anxiety disorders? What types of anxiety disorders exist?

Answer:
Anxiety disorders are a category of neurotic disorders with anxiety as a prominent or the prominent symptom. They are quite common (in a recent British survey 16% of the population suffer from some kind of pathological anxiety). According to the ICD-10 (international classification of diseases - 10th edition) anxiety disorders are classified as follows:

Phobic anxiety disorder:

  • Agoraphobia (with or without panic disorder)
  • Social phobias
  • Specific (isolated) phobias
Other anxiety disorders:
  • Panic disorder
  • Generalised anxiety disorder
  • Mixed anxiety and depressive disorder
Obsessive compulsive disorder
