My mother doesn't respect my decisions as an adult. I'm not just entering adulthood, either. I can't get her to understand that her role as parent is over, and that we can, of course, be good friends. I'm frustrated and feel that I want to break off all contact with her, yet I feel duty-bound to be in contact with her. She, of course, expects that I will be the dutiful little boy who will at least call her every week and visit several times per year, even though I live 230 miles away. How do I handle this?

Call her frequently, not just once a week. Give her a cell phone should you be able to afford. If not just call and be nice and friendly, don't argue with her.
