Not contact anyone over the phone

a friend who is homosexual, and was having relationship problems, due to somewhat unexcepting parents, became depressed, after seeing someone about his depression, he was told that he should not be in contact with anyone over the phone. why is this? and wouldnt being able to speak to people he feels comfortable talking to about all aspects of his life, but cannot due so in person due to distance, be benificial?
