My brother has been drinking heavily for many years. 2 or 3 years ago, he drank 1 liter of whisky exclusively without any other forms of alcohol. Last year, he had decided to quit drinking (I should say quit drinking liquor). Two days after he got a seizure; it was diagnosed as alcoholic withdrawal. after that, he didn't stop completely. He has been drinking 7-10 bottles of beers daily since last Feb. He had done a MRI but nothing abnormal. In April, he had another seizure (he said he felt cold at that time). He saw a psychiartist and because he has other medical conditions so that no medication has been prescribed to him at that time, except diazepam. He was on diazepam for several months, and then he stop taking gradually (without doctor consultaion). Recently, he has tried to cut down the consumption of beers (but not dramatically). He had another seizure again (in that morning, he claimed that he was tired and not feeling well).
Now, He said he knows he should quit drinking but he scares that the seizure will return. We have suggested to get treatment in the hospital, but he refuse. We all worry, so do the seizure he has related to his action of cutting dowm the consumption of beer? If not, is it he has alcoholic seizure after chronic use of alcohol? Can he slowely and gradually reduce the consumption of beer by himself, is that safe?
Please help.....we are desperated.
