If the person is dependent of alcohol, he will never get normal. He will have to restrict himself to drinking non-alcoholic drinks for the rest of his life, or he will perish from alcoholism.

Most withdrawal symptoms from alcohol dependence will disappear after 1-2 weeks. More info.
