Hello Doctor,
I have come to the conclusion that I have traits refered to as ADHD and I am not certain if I should seek any type of medical treatment. If I have coped with this for this long, what is the best thing for me to do to overcome some of the short falls I face? I am a 47yr old adult male in good health. I really don't want to resort to any type of medicine, but I do occasionally smoke a little pot.
I have had some issues in the last few years with mild depression and though I got a prescription for Zoloft I only used a few weeks before I decided I didnt' want to use it.
I suppose what I am really looking for are a few ways to overcome my lack of focus and concentration I desparately need in order to be successful in my career as a saleman. Maybe you could refer me to some good books as I do enjoy reading. (5 or 6 books at at ime : ) I am self employed and with ADHD symptoms combinded with the evil of procrastination I often struggle with being productive.
I have read the positive side of ADHD and I believe that I have everyone of the positive aspects of this disorder.
Thank you for your advice

1. Stop selfmedication with pot. It is causing severe problems for adhd patients.
2. It might be necessary to medicate your adhd constitution before you will be able to cope with the problems of every day life. Coaching is a very effective methods to learn skills for this problem. But many patients need medication first to achieve best results.
3. Prozac is a good medication, but ssri do not have any effect on adhd (onyl effective for comorbid depression, anxiety, eating disorder or ocd).
4. To focus on strenghts and ressources is a very good way to cope with adhd. There are a lot of good books about adhd and coaching. But I do not think it is a rational method to focus on reading. Clients with adhd need an individual help for their problems. So a personal coach with knowledge of adhd would be my first choice.
