The need for sleep varies very much between different people. You cannot stipulate a standard norm suitable for everyone.

In the summer, we have light almost all night in Sweden. While in the winter, we have almost no light at all. That is why some animals, like bears, sleep for many moths during the winter.

In meditteranian countries, people often sleep for an hour in the middle of the day. I think this is a nice custom.

In Germany there is a general lack of sleep. People usally tend to use TV to find sleep. Many people have only 4-6 hours of sleep and feel tired in the morning.

In Spain and other Mediterranean countries, we have very good blinds on the windows that don't let the light pass. When we go to other countries, like Sweden, we wake up too early in the morning because of the light and too early can mean 2 a.m. in June. It can take several months until you get used to it or you might not get used to it at all.
