I am 25, my brother is nearly 28. He lives with my parents, refuses to work, help around the house or do anything but sit and watch TV all day. My parents almost lost him at birth due to a gentic disorder and I feel they are constantly afraid f losing him. They don't help him at all by coddling to him and letting him walk over them, but they refuse to seek family counseling. They do not even insist on him seeking counseling. As the youngest in the family, my opinion is not asked for nor appreciated, but it is very difficult to stand by and watch my brother destroy my parents' lives. My mom cries too often, my dad is angry all the time, and yet, my brother is not asked to change in any way. What can I do to help? how can I convince them that counseling could help? How do I get over my anger at my brother so I can help them all cope with the open heart I should have. I really need some advice, I am at a loss...

Clearly, you need to make it known to your parents that you are a fully functioning adult- something your sibling is not. You also need to make it known that despite you being the 'youngest'you are the not the defenceless or the one to ignore. This "first son trap' is a common symptom in many families, especially where a sibling once highly achieved, especially in teenage years. Once you have established a more mutually respectable relationship with your parents, your advice will be heeded. Until that occurs, you can not hope to influence their governing of the family situation.
