My boyfriend of 53 yrs. old sometimes has a "bad time" (maybe once a year) and asks that I not call him - he will get in touch with me. He tells me that it has nothing to do with me, but he seems upset, depressed, and forgetful. I take it personally that he does not want to discuss with me what the problem(s) are. We have been together six and one-half years and do not live together. I usually get in touch with him because days go by, and I get so upset that I do not hear from him. It has happened again and am waiting for him to get out of it and get in touch with me. I am giving him the space he has asked for, but I feel so bad about his pushing me away, especially when I am willing to help him. He loves me very much, so why does he not confide in me? Why does it take three to four or more days to get over his bad mood? I am taking this personally even though he says not to. I don't know what I am supposed to do. Please help. thank you
If you want to help him, you have to give him the space he needs. Do not contact him when he needs to be alone. See your friends and enjoy yourself. Be confident that he will contact you after a while. This is nothing against you. All men have this need to withdraw now and then. Just accept it as you cannot change him.
