What does it really mean to commit yourself to someone in a relationship? Does it mean being available to them 24x7, thinking about them all the time, cutting off all other ties with other people you know etc.?

I do not think so. You should still be able to have your friends and interests. Otherwise you will be fed up after a while. Do things with your partner when both of you feel like it.
