Abstract:

The risk for sexual abuse increases with the age of the child.

Question:

Does the risk for child abuse depend on the age of the child?

Answer:

The risk for child sexual abuse (CSA) rises with age. According to a 1998 study of child abuse statistics from the American Department of Health and Human Services (Putnam 2003, 1993) the prevalence of CSA is distributed over different ages in the following way:

Age Percentage of all CSA
0-3 years appr. 10 %
4-7 years appr. 28 %
8-11 years appr. 26 %
12 and older appr. 36 %
