Is there only one type of depression?
How is depression classified?
Answer:
In general we recognize the following types of depression:
Primary:
Unipolar

Mixed anxiety and depressive disorder - with prominent anxiety

Depressive episode - single episode
-
Recurrent depressive disorder - recurrent episodes
-
Dysthymia - persistent and mild (depressive personality)
Bipolar:

Bipolar affectve disorder - with manic episodes ("manic depression")

Cyclothymia - instability, frequently changing episodes of mild depression and mild mania, persistent irritability of mood
Other primary:
-
Seasonal affective disorder
-
Brief recurrent depression
Secondary:
May be secondary to medical condition, (physical or psychiatric) or alcohol ar other drugs.
Depressive episode:
Each episode may be:

Moderate or severe.
-
With or without somatic syndrome
-
If severe, with or without psyhotic symptoms.
