I have just adopted an 18 yr old boy who has had trouble in school, mostly academic and minor behavioral. He was diagnosed with ADHD in 2002, and never received treatment. I am taking him to specialists and we intend to treat him with appropriate medication. He is an outstanding athlete, with possibilities of college scholarships, so I want to make sure the medication will not effect his eligibility (banned substance). Do you know if Concerta, Adderall or dexedrine contains substances banned for atheletic sports? Thanks

Psychstimulants (methylphenidate or amphetamines) are banned substances for athletic sports. But the antidepressant atomoxetine (strattera) might be an alternative medical treatment for your boy. Talk to your local psychiatrists about this treatment option.
