they say children outgrow adhd as adults. How do you know other than taking them off the medication? And if they are going into the teenage years and have been on the medication since kindergarten is it time to try and ween them off the medication?

Most adhd experts recommend a time off period without medication at least once a year. I do not think an adhd patients "outgrows" the vulnerability adhd. But he or she may learn to cope with the problems caused by adhd and take advantage of some of the positive aspects of adhd traits.
