question
My stepdaughters biological mother is diagnosed with bipolar wtith pychotic episodes. I have never dealt with issues or people who exhibit these behaviors. We let my stepdaughter go with her mom unsupervised, how stable are people with this? Is my 9 yr old stepdaughter safe with her mom? Is it possible for her mother to have an episode and cause harm to her daughter?

I see no reason to worry. Bipolar disorder is a chronic disease with episodes of depression and maybe mania. Most patients have a long episode without any symptoms of the disorder. And most patients show a rather good response to medication (usually mood stabilizer, antidepressant, maybe antipsychotic medication).

Psychotic episodes can be present in bipolar. But usually relatives or a doctor will notice other symptoms of a new episode much earlier. So there is no reason to be concerned about the women and her relation to the girl.

It might be different in case no proper medication or other kind of therapy or support are given or accepted.
