You most definately should follow your doctor's recommendations. To live without proteins is dangerous whilst at the same time the proportions of proteins that we consume in the west are unnecessary big and can be a load if one has sensative kidneys. 60 grams per 24 hours is sufficient for the human body. In my work I have met several people that have become healthier once they have started eating nutritious food such as raw food, fruits, vegetables, sprouts, nuts and seeds. The overload of protein has a negative effect on the kidneys but to make sure speak to a nutritionist or a dietition.
