Hi there
My wife and I are planning to go on an important journey in about 8 months from now, in which our 15 month old boy will not be able to go with. The journey will last for about 1 month or so. Our child will be about 2 years old by that time which will coincide with the time that we plan to wean him off breastfeeding. At present he is extremely attached to his mother and becomes agitated when not in her company. We are concerned about the combined impact of weaning and physical separation. He would be staying with his grandparents and aunts while we are away and his older sister (7 years old )would also be with him. What are the possible effects that this could have on him during the separation as well as later in life? Is there anything we can do from now until we leave, in order to minimise the impact that the separation may have on him - the journey is very important to us but so is his development.

Sincerely
Parents in dilemma

Let him be with his grandparents as much as possible from now and on. Then you will find out, if he is happy with them or not. Wean him off breastfeeding now. It will be too much for him to loose breastfeeding and his mother at the same time.
