I have 26 year old daughter who is single mom. She is recently entered into a new relationship with a bipolar 28 year old. I am trying to tell her that this is not good for her and her one year old baby. but she does not listen to me. She is in denial and I am so afraid. He is trying to isolate her and is pressuring her to commit to him and tell her to deny visitation rights for the baby's grand parents (father side). He knows that I see his illness and he is turning my daughter aginst me too and telling her that I do not like him. She is now disrespectful to me and wants me to be in denial and play the game like there is nothing wrong with this man. I tell her that I do not have anything against him, but he has try to kill himself before he stays up all night and paint strang paintings on the wall and has many goals with non accomplished. I do not know if I should stay out so that she sees it for herself or stay close to watch out for her and the baby. Please help.

Please read this article and consult a doctor if you are worried about the boy friend. Let your daughter also read it. At the end of the day we all learn by 'acting' on what we think is right for us. Trust your daughter, be there for her, nagging would not make her leave the person- there may be a 'sympathy factor' working- talk to your daughter and understand what she wants and why she is with this person, where she thinks this is likely to go. Don't leave her alone or 'watch' the boy friend- you can't do that 24 hours. Only way you can do that is if your daughter trusts you about the boy friends and confides in you. It must be painful to see your daughter in this relationship, but there must be something that she finds in the relationship, try and see her point of view also. Conflict will only alienate her. Be there if she needs you.
