My neice, 35 yrs and an MD, been suffering from a bipolar (mixed type) last 15 yrs or so, i.e., about 2 years after my her mother's (my sis) death from breast cancer. She's received psychiatric therpay since then-- but not until recently (exactly last one year), with the help of a new psychiatrist and therapist in town, that she seems stable and close to normal. She is still on medication. what I know of are: low doses of 2 mood stabilizers (one is lithium), 10 mg of a mjor tranquilizer (desepramine), and an antidepressant. On 07/07/07 and at 7 AM her father shot himself through the heart while she was sleeping in another room. He was a terminal case fro the effects of diabetes(heart failure, leg needs amputation, etc). Now,,, what worries me her extremely normal demeanor with no reaction whatsoever to the tragedy. She seems callus carrying out normal chores of the day as always. When I ask her about the way she feels, her response always "I'm fine, well I feel so for him (her father)".. I'm worried about her lack of any reaction.. is that normal? or is it because her illness? or overly medicated or what?.. Please help me understand... and how can i give her the kind of response she may need? appreciate your response ASAP.. I'm suffering myself!
