What are common myths or taboos concerning male masturbation, masturbation by boys and men?

Answer:

1. What is meant by "jacking off"

There are a lot of similar slang words for masturbation by a guy (e.g. beating off, whacking off, beating your meat, yanking, jilling off). Touching or rubbing your sexual organs for pleasure and reaching an orgasm and ejaculation is a normal part of sexual life for men and women of all ages. The majority of all boys or men, girls or women masturbate. There is no reason to worry about it.

2. Why do people masturbate?

Because it is a normal way to reach an orgasm and feel good and learn more about the sexual needs and bodily reactions!

3. Is masturbation a taboo?

Since masturbation is a healthy and normal part of everyone's life there is no reason to be ashamed . More than 90% of all people masturbate but more than 60% feel guilty about it. This might be caused by parental influences, religious expectations or lack of sufficient sexual education at home and school.

4. If I ejaculate frequently, will this cause harm for later life?

No. Masturbation does not affect the health. As a matter of fact the more often a man ejaculates the more sperms he produces. Most experts would recommend masturbation as a normal part of sexual life. It might have some positive effects on your health, because it can:

  • reduce stress
  • help to release sexual tension / reduce unwanted wet dreams
  • help to fall asleep
  • might have a positive effect on your immune system

5. Does masturbation cause "blue balls"?

Blue balls is another slang expression. It is a normal part of the sexual arousal of a man to have a higher blood flow in the genital organs, including penis and testicles ("balls"). Ejaculation usually causes a reflow of the blood into the body. If a man is sexually stimulated but has no ejaculation this might cause a decreased reflow of the blood. This might cause some discomfort and sometime a darker /blue color of the testis. However, there is more myth than reality to "blue balls". Since a masturbation will give an ejaculation there is no reason to expect this might happen...

6. If I stick my index finger in my anus (butt) is this a first sign of homosexuality?

No! It can be a normal experience, also for a heterosexual, to explore the body and make different sexual experiences for a boy or girl.

7. Is masturbation a way of cheating your girlfriend? Why?

If you masturbate this is a rather normal way to make sexual experiences for a boy or girl. Sometimes a partnership might be disturbed, if there is a lack of sufficient communication about sexuality. Try to explain that masturbation is not a sign that your spouse cannot satisfy you. But it might be a start to talk about your sexual wishes and experiences.
